Cluster Analysis Tutorial using Windows 95

A short tutorial on cluster analysis has been developed and was first presented at the University of St. Andrews in April 1999.  The tutorial describes ClustanGraphics and includes practical case studies from the social and biological sciences.

The content is as follows:

  • Data preparation and transformation
  • Proximity analysis
  • Hierarchical cluster analysis
  • Large data clustering
  • k-Means analysis
  • Outlier detection
  • Classifying new cases
  • Optimal ordering and graphical presentation

The tutorial presentation lasts for about an hour, and is followed by a Windows 98 practical session in a PC Classroom.   Anyone interested in attending the next tutorial should contact Dr Wishart by email or see Training for forthcoming events.

A Classification Course contributing to the M.A. or B.Sc. Honours Degrees in Mathematics and Statistics from the University of St Andrews uses Clustan.  This short course is taught by Dr Allan Gordon, author of the standard textbook Classification, Chapman and Hall, 1999 (2nd edition).  It is only open to undergraduates of the University of St Andrews.
